Apple halts iPadOS 18 update for M4

Apple has temporarily paused the rollout of the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pros after several complaints of devices being “bricked” by the update. This means the update will no longer be available to users when they check for updates, and Apple’s servers won’t activate the update if it’s installed through other means. Some M4 iPad Pro users have reported that their devices became unresponsive after installing the update, while others have successfully updated without any issues.

Apple is reportedly offering hardware replacements for affected users, suggesting a severe bug, as usually, devices can be recovered through recovery (or DFU) mode following a problematic software update.

Apple pauses iPadOS 18 rollout

There have been reports that some users first installed the iPadOS 17.7 update, meant as a security update for those not ready for the full iPadOS 18 upgrade, before attempting to install iPadOS 18.0. The 17.7 to 18.0 upgrade path may not have been as thoroughly tested as the 17.6 to 18.0 upgrade.

Apple confirmed that it had “temporarily removed” the update to “resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices.”

M4 iPad Pro owners who haven’t yet upgraded will need to wait for either a new version of iPadOS 18 that resolves the issues or for Apple to determine if the bricked iPads are encountering a hardware problem rather than a software glitch. Meanwhile, iPadOS 17.7 is still available and should be installed for the latest security patches while the iPadOS 18 issues are being addressed. The iPadOS 18.0 update continues to be available for other iPads, including the M2 iPad Air.
