App Industry Roundup: Skype updates app for 3G calls

Skype’s refreshed iPhone app can now make calls over AT&T’s 3G network, but it will come at a cost. That item leads today’s App Industry Roundup, where we also look at eBook concerns and the growing voice of the Android fanboy.

You know Android has come a long way lately because a familiar term to Apple geeks is starting to emerge for the Google operating system: Fanboy.

In a TechCrunch essay over the Memorial Day weekend, writer MC Siegler wrote about how the Android fanboys descended on him after a recent column comparing the iPhone to the new HTC Evo, available this week from Sprint. (My Evo review unit just arrived, and let me say this after my initial glance: Wow.) Siegler is an iPhone fan and writes from that perspective, which he makes perfectly clear. Not suprisingly, he concludes that the Evo is no iPhone.

That lit up the Android fanboys, who blasted his column, saying things like “How much did Apple pay you to write this?”

That led to a wise follow-up column, where Siegler writes, “So why is such zealotry a good thing? Because passion is important. If people actually care about Android that much, Google is clearly doing something right. Windows Mobile has never instilled this type of passion in anyone. Nor has Symbian. For a while, it seemed like the Palm Pre might. But it never did. But Android is.”

And then the Android fanboys blasted him some more. Sound familiar, Apple geeks?
