Twitter continues its steady takeover of the mobile realm with the announcement of an upcoming Android app. Just days after announcing the release of an official BlackBerry app in partnership with RIM, and the acquisition of Tweetie developer atebits, Twitter marks its territory for the Android Market as well.
All we’re missing is the app that could be snapped up by Twitter, should the company decide to buy its way into the Android marketplace. Here are some Twitter apps that already have a hold on the Android Market, even if they haven’t caught the eye of Twitter.
Big in Android
Twidroid is the most recognized Twitter app for Android, because of its name and early entry to the market. The features aren’t half bad either. For a sleek look, TweetCaster is a most appealing app for Android, with a smooth interface and easily-navigated menu options. While TweetCaster is not strictly an Android app, its ability to make Twitter interactions a simpler task may be more important to Twitter and users.
Niche appeal
Twidgit Lite does one thing well—add a Twitter widget to your Android phone’s home screen. View tweets, send updates, view direct messages and share content with the free app. Given Android’s appeal as a customizable device, the widget access is an important consideration for leveraging specific capabilities.
For every popular mobile app with full features, there’s another with just the basics. Twit2go is one such Android app that’s kept things simple for the no-frills user. Free, Twit2go makes good use of the Android-specific platform abilities for sharing content through Twitter.
As it’s becoming standard for iPhone Twitter apps to use third-party services like Posterous for storing content Twitter doesn’t support, we should expect to see this on more Android Twitter apps.
