Americans hope Trump tackles economy, inflation

Trump tackles

Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election has Americans across the country voicing their hopes and concerns for his upcoming term. Reporters spoke with residents in New York, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. to gauge their expectations. The economy and inflation emerged as the primary issues voters want Trump to address.

“Our spending is totally out of control, that needs to be controlled,” said Bob in D.C. Joe, also in D.C., emphasized the need to focus on helping the middle class and addressing “the costs of things.”

Austin in Birmingham, Michigan, expressed hopes for Trump to improve the economy and lower inflation, citing it as a principal reason many voted for him. Naya in New York City echoed these sentiments, highlighting inflation as a critical issue for many voters. Ron in Claymont, Delaware, stressed the importance of helping senior citizens who struggle to afford rent and necessary prescriptions.

“I would hope that he’s going to raise Social Security so they can afford to do something,” Ron said.

Hopes for tackling economic issues

Some voters expressed optimism for Trump’s second term.

Ray in New York said, “I’m just optimistic to see what he does.” Michael in Birmingham hoped Trump would continue the positive attitude shown during his acceptance speech and called for more productive rhetoric. However, concerns were also raised. Omni in New York City and Tom in Claymont suggested Trump should resign, while Ashley in Birmingham urged him not to be misogynistic.

Cameron in New York City emphasized the importance of Trump connecting with Americans: “Listen to the people, what the people want and try to, like, you know, connect more with the American people.”

Trump’s victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as he managed to cut deeply into his 2020 loss margins in traditionally blue states and is on track to win the popular vote nationally, making him only the second Republican to do so since 1988. The President-elect celebrated his win alongside Vice President-elect JD Vance at an election night watch party in Palm Beach, Florida, on November 6, 2024. As he prepares to return to the White House, Americans nationwide await to see how he will address their concerns and shape the country’s future.
