For individuals who have dreamed about taking a red editing pen to a children’s story, or perhaps creating their own, the iPhone StoryKit app is a great place to start.
Created by a team of researchers at the University of Maryland’s Human-Computer Interaction Lab, StoryKit allows users to dive into some of the most famous children’s stories not only as a reader, but also as an editor.
Open the app, and you’ll find several classic selections, including the Three Little Pigs, Three Bears and Humpty Dumpty, complete with hand-drawn illustrations. Users can go through the stories in two ways, as a reader and as an editor.
As an editor, users can change the text, as well as the design of the pages. If, for example, you think the wolf in the Three Little Pigs huffed and puffed a few more times than is written, you can add a few extra huffs and puffs.
Or, if you’d like to add text or captions to some of the illustrations, you can do that, too. There are also options to add audio and photographs.
But where users can really get creative, is in writing and designing their own stories. The app includes a feature allowing users to fill in the pages of a blank book. The book can then be shared with other users of the app.
