There are a lot of 3D brick breaker games available, but weirdly, most of them are basically recreations of their classic 2D counterparts. Just because the bricks you’re breaking have an added dimension doesn’t mean the game is any different.
Aces 3D Brick Breaker isn’t like that. In Aces, the camera places you directly in front of the panel of bricks you’ll be smashing. When you launch the ball that smashes the bricks, you have to line it up using a pong style paddle to make sure you hit the ball when it comes back, and “return serve” as it were, into the pile of bricks. This really is a 3D brick breaker game, and a very good one at that.
Once you get past the initial learning curve of figuring out how to judge the ball’s depth of field and how it’ll react off the various environmental objects, you’ll find a very enjoyable game. There are seven different environments to break bricks in, which helps relieve the monotony of the old brick breaker games from years gone by.
Aces is littered with power-ups and special blocks, too, offering more variety to an old format. Now you’ll have to contend with dynamite bricks that cause explosions when struck, or indestructible bricks that will make it harder for you to smash surrounding bricks, among other difficulties.
If you’re looking for a brick breaking game that pushes past the monotony of the genre, Aces 3D Brick Breaker is that game. It adds a new dimension (literally!) to a style of game that hasn’t changed in a very long time, and succeeds completely.
