Head into the weekend with MTV WatchWith, an app designed to let you read and write comments on your favorite MTV shows alongside other fans. The app syncs to your time zone using your device’s GPS capabilities, so all you have to do is turn on the TV to catch up with what everyone is saying about your show. Next up is TableDrum, an app that picks up the sound of you drumming on a table and converts it into drum sounds. In games, Brain in Jar is a running game in which you’ll use your disembodied brain’s psychic powers to dodge obstacles, while Rally-X Rumble reboots Namco’s classic top-down arcade racer with a whole bunch of new game modes.
MTV WatchWith (iPhone, iPad) Free
If you’re a fan of MTV shows, you might want to pick up MTV WatchWith, a “second-screen” companion app that you to connect with other fans of your favorite programs. As the app’s description describes it, “it’s like DVR for social commentary,” aggregating comments from Twitter and Facebook users to allow you to see what other people are thinking and saying right along with what you’re watching.
You don’t just have to be content to reading along while you watch, however. MTV WatchWith allows you to comment as well. You’ll need a Facebook or Twitter login to sign up, but once you connect with a social networking service, you can make comments and post them to your status updates or Twitter feeds as well. The app also knows where you are and when you’re watching using your device’s GPS capabilities, so you never have to configure, just watch.
TableDrum (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
I spend a lot of time drumming on things – it’s something of a nervous habit – but I also just like drumming along to music. TableDrum is for people like me: you turn the app on and set your device on a table and start drumming away. Using your iDevice’s microphone, TableDrum creates drumming sounds in time with what you’re playing.
TableDrum works with just about any object you can drum on, and includes eight different drum samples in the “Classic Rock” kit. The app also allows you to purchase a pair of other drum kits and as many as 32 other sounds with which to play around.
Brain In Jar (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
A telekinetic brain, a laboratory and a cart with wheels – that’s pretty much everything that goes into Brain In Jar, a running game that’s about dodging objects in the path of your brain cart. As the brain in the jar, you need to exact your escape. You can’t stop the cart, but you can adjust its speed and use your powers to jump over tables and other objects. Along the way, you must pick up cloning molecules to give yourself extra lives, because your jar brain is going to get splattered around the lab more than once.
With a fun mix of 3-D graphics and a slightly cartoony look, Brain In Jar isn’t too complex, but it does get harrowing. You’ll have to react quickly to hop over objects with your cart and avoid death. In each of the 25 levels, you’re scored by the clone molecules you can pick up and the deaths you can avoid. Scores are tracked on leaderboards provided by Game Center.
RALLY-X RUMBLE (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
A reboot of Namco’s classic arcade racing title, New Rally-X, Rally-X Rumble is a top-down racer in which your job is to maneuver through Pac-Man-like mazes in which you’ll need to dodge other racers trying to take you down as you gather points for collecting rally flags. Your car continues endlessly while you quickly make turns down different alleys, doing your best to avoid collisions along the way.
Rally-X Rumble packs four different game modes: a classic mode that brings back the original’s arcade gameplay, a two-second high-scoring mode, and two online multiplayer modes. The first has three players competing against one has he or she tries to score as many points as possible; in the other, players use their cars to “paint” the track, trying to cover as much as possible before time runs out while repainting their opponents’ tracks. More game modes are on the way, and Rally-X Rumble also includes achievements and leaderboards care of Game Center.
