If you’re a fan of action titles or racing games, Reckless Getaway is one app that’s sure to please. The premise is simple, and there is virtually no introduction at all. A bank has been robbed, and it’s your job to safely make it through the police roadblock. The mayhem and carnage that occur between these two points is the game in a nutshell, and it’s certainly a fun nut to crack.
Though the gameplay is decidedly different than that of Reckless Racing (by the same developer), there are elements that remind me of that great earlier racing game. Destructible environments, a gritty cartoon art style and well-tuned controls have all made it into Reckless Getaway, and for that I am grateful. The flawless controls found in the earlier game are spot-on here, as well. However, those looking for a different level of precision, might adjust the steering sensitivity to fit their needs.
Where Reckless Getaway differs from it’s earlier racing cousin is in the style of driving. This is not a game where shaving a second or two off a lap time is the key to winning. It is about obstacle avoidance, coin and power-up collecting and creating as much havoc for the pursuing law enforcement as possible.
A fair bit of course memorization will be required to gain four stars for each level. Knowing each course well will allow you to find the best parts of the track to maximize coin pickups, as well as the best times to use the various power-ups found scattered along the course. Crashing into immovable objects or head-on into traffic will remove one star from the possible four you can earn on every stage. Earning one or two stars on each stage proved to be a rather easy task, but filling up the third and fourth stars on even some of the early stages takes skillful driving. That being said, the game is not too long, and I was glad to see the developers promising new chapters in future updates.
I really enjoyed Reckless Getaway from start to finish. It does an excellent job of taking the excitement and danger of a great car chase, and packing it into a tight little arcade experience. I give it my full recommendation.
