Another big Gameloft game has hit the iTunes App Store, and as usual, it’s a highly polished offering with great production values and a full-fledged console video game feel. It’s also a super-violent third-person shooter, and for that, it leads this week’s best games. Check it out below, and read all about four other great offerings that hit the App Store this week.
9mm (iPhone, iPad) – $6.99
Gameloft’s take on console gaming’s Max Payne series is a solid third-person shooter with some great graphics and a deep, cinematic feel that’s not to be missed. It’s violent and gritty – definitely a game for adults, based on the blood spatter and language being used – but 9mm is also a dark game with mature themes and a lot of slow-motion diving through the air, dodging bullets and blasting gangsters with a variety of weapons. Nailing the feel of the console titles it draws from, 9mm brings more of Gameloft’s polish and high degree of quality to the App Store, and it packs a big multi-player offering to keep things interesting.
Reckless Getaway (iPhone, iPad) $2.99
Top-down racer Reckless Getaway is all about evading the cops and making a tight, skin-of-your-teeth getaway. Primarily, the game is about collecting coins and doing stunts to earn points, but the reason you’re making a getaway in Reckless Getaway is that you just robbed a bank, and the cops aren’t too happy about it. So they’re chasing you and trying to take you out, and for every time the cops wreck your car, you lose a star off your total ranking for the stage. That means staying alive is key to a high score in Reckless Getaway, and racking up the numbers by driving dangerously – by weaving in and out of traffic, jumping cars with ramps and taking out cops – is what the game’s all about. Fun, goofy physics and intense action make Reckless Getaway a winner.
The Blocks Cometh by Halfbot update (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
The Blocks Cometh was already a pretty solid arcade offering, in which players had to help guide a character in dodging an ever-present threat of huge blocks falling from the sky. The goal is just to climb as high as possible, and that was fun – but with its first big update, developer Halfbot has added two new game modes and a bunch of new characters and achievements to unlock. It’s a lot of new content, adding quite a bit of value to an already fun game that’s sort of in the vein of titles like Doodle Jump, only tougher. Plus, the price is cut for a little while longer to celebrate the update.
Captain America: Sentinel of Justice (iPhone, iPad) $4.99
Captain America: Sentinel of Justice is a whole lot like the iOS version of Mirror’s Edge, a title Electronic Arts released for the iPad last August. Truthfully, it’d be kind of nice if there were more titles like that game. Captain America is part 2-D running game, part platformer and part beat-’em-up, pitting players against enemies that stand in their way and charging them pummeling them while dodging over and under obstacles to keep racking up points. The whole game is controlled by gestures – swiping one way sets Cap running, swiping up makes him jump, and so on. It’s a fluid and interesting way to play, and while it’s really similar to Mirror’s Edge, it at least packs its own brand-new World War II Captain America story.
QuBIT (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
QuBIT is an interesting little 3-D racing game. Players control a robot that has to crash into crystals of various colors in order to collect them. The robot is constantly moving and always has receptacles of different colors to match the crystals. After you get one color of crystal, that receptacle is filled and you can’t crash into that color crystal anymore. It creates an interesting situation in which you’ll need to tilt your iOS device to steer into some objects and avoid others, all the while keeping track of your robot’s energy to avoid running out and losing the game. It’s all about endurance and racking up points, and at just a buck, QuBIT is an interesting and addicting game.
