Fresh iPhone Apps for June 7: iRadio, Smart Travelling Guide, Polar Puzzles Lite, Ice Tales

In honor of iCloud, but not really having anything to do with it, today’s Fresh iPhone Apps list is led off by iRadio, an Internet radio app that contains connections to about 30,000 stations. It only costs a buck and includes lots of interesting customization features, and is great for a trip; as is Smart Travelling Guide, an app that’s all about finding the best things in all categories in 32 major cities – including local sights, and of course, food. We’ve also got a couple of penguin-themed casual games as the weather heats up. Polar Puzzles Lite is a grid-based puzzler in which you try to guide a penguin back to his nest in as few moves as possible, while Ice Tales is a grid-based casual action game, where grabbing everything and doing it fast is the goal. Download all four of them below.

iRadio (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Internet radio fans will get a kick out of iRadio. It’s an app that makes streaming content from the Internet easy, because it contains a huge number of Internet radio stations. In fact, there are 30,000 stations represented on iRadio – and they’re all available to stream any time, over either a Wi-Fi or a 3G connection.

In addition to just showing the station that’s playing, iRadio presents lots of information, about song and artist, as well as the album from which the track was taken. You can also “tag” songs to listen to them later and make recordings of the tracks, which you can then edit. iRadio packs recommended stations to give users a good place at which to jump in, and will find stations tailored to your tastes based on the artists in your music library that you supply.

Smart Travelling Guides (iPhone, iPad) Free (with in-app purchases of $9.99 each)

You’ll want to grab Smart Travelling Guides if you’re traveling abroad in Europe. The app contains information about several cities, and works to help travelers and business people get the most out of their experiences when they visit foreign (or even domestic) cities. The app is all about recommendations, helping travelers to find accommodations, see sights and even eat the best food available.

Smart Travelling Guide lays down more than 5,000 recommendations spread out across 32 cities, although developer R.O.S.A. Radar GmbH promises more to come. You can also download content for offline viewing, storing it in the app in case you’re out of range of a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. Smart Travelling starts out free for a week; after that, the guide for each city must be purchased separately, with each drawing $9.99. Be sure to plan your trip accordingly to coincide with the app’s free trial services.

Polar Puzzles Lite (iPhone, iPad) Free

In Polar Puzzles, your task is to help reunite a penguin with his family back in his nest. To do so, you’ll be solving puzzles; isn’t that always the way? Your penguin protagonist can only move either straight horizontally or straight vertically, with each level set on a grid. Laid onto that grid are obstacles, like holes in the ice or walls. Your penguin can only move in one direction at a time, and he slides until he hits either an obstacle or the edge of the stage.

Your goal in Polar Puzzles is to slide your penguin to his nest in as few moves as possible. When you swipe in any direction, your penguin will take off going that way, regardless of the hazards that are bound to take him out. Achieving high scores on Polar Puzzles is all about taking the long view and figuring out each level before you start powering through, looking at the puzzles and figuring them out through logic. That’s how you keep your move numbers down and scores high.

Ice Tales (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Similar to Polar Puzzles is Ice Tales. The game contains penguins, and those penguins are cute, and it employs a simplified up and down swiping controlling technique just like Polar Puzzles. The difference is, Ice Tales doesn’t really have puzzles to solve; it’s more of an action game, with speed being emphasized over skill. You’ll guide a penguin through elaborate mazes littered with starfish and other things you’re required to try to collect, all the while trying to keep your overall time down while dodging animals that want to kill your penguin.

Ice Tales features three game difficultly modes for players to work through, as well as Game Center integration to bring achievements and leaderboards to keep up on how other players are doing in comparison to you. The game is also fully integrated with Facebook and Twitter, allowing players to brag about their casual game high scores online.
