Frisbee Forever is a free app that delivers fun for both the young and young at heart. It’s a very simple Frisbee “racing” game where the objective is to navigate a course while collecting stars along the way. These stars equate to in-game currency that allows you to purchase different Frisbee disc designs, new levels, wallpaper artwork and various extras to help progress through the game. I found the gameplay to be light and appealing to both young and old.
At first glance, Frisbee Forever is a very simple app, with little to offer in terms of varying gameplay or stunning graphics. What the title does provide is an example of how even the simplest game can be addicting when paired with collecting and leveling up mechanics.
One begins play with a single swipe to start the disc flying. From this point on, momentum can only be gained from collecting stars and flying along arrowed pathways on a predetermined course. Missing stars along the way will not only net a lower score at the completion of the track, but will slow the Frisbee down to the point at which it stalls and ends the run.
The steering for the disc can be handled in two ways. Tapping on either side of the screen will make the disc veer right or left, but in a very digital on/off jerky fashion. I much preferred the tilt mechanic for turning, as this yielded a much smoother feel.
That is really the extent of the gameplay. What is it then that compels me to keep playing minutes or even hours (in the case of my six-year-old) later? Collecting and achievements compel me. There are more than 100 tracks to be played in this game, and an astounding 100 discs to collect. This — coupled with several bonus items, such as the star magnet ability, and a score of achievements — give Frisbee Forever that addicting quality often found in top iOS apps.
One other issue I need to address in this review is that of sound. I find it difficult to understand why some developers don’t separate the sound effects in the game from the background music, and give users the ability to turn the music off, while leaving sound effects on. Some will find the soundtrack lighthearted and fun, but after five minutes I never wanted to hear it again, and was left with no choice but to turn off all in-game sound. This is a rather small gripe that doesn’t affect gameplay, but is something I wish all developers would address.
Is Frisbee Forever a cutting edge title that pushes the boundaries of graphics or gameplay? In a word, no. Does it offer a free and easy-to-pick-up-and-play experience for young and older gamers? Yes it does. And therefore it earns a spot on my iPad.
