Leading this week’s best games is a title that might not be the most innovative of games — it’s part of the castle defense genre, which is getting pretty overcrowded in the App Store — but it scores a lot of points for being fresh and hilarious. It’s Army of Darkness Defense, a side-scrolling brawler based on the 1992 cult classic horror film Army of Darkness, and it includes a whole lot of awesome content for fans of the film. Army of Darkness Defense (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Voice clips from the movie Army of Darkness are what make this castle defense game an awesome addition to any movie nut’s game library. Featuring actual lines of dialogue from the 1992 cult classic, the voice of Bruce Campbell and lots of enemies, abilities, weapons and items from the Evil Dead series, Army of Darkness Defense finds great fodder for putting together an iPhone game. Things are pretty simple — you play as main character, Ash, wielding his “boomstick” (shotgun) and prosthetic hand (including a chainsaw) fighting off waves of undead Deadites as you (kind of) act out a key scene from the film. There are 50 levels to play through and lots of humorous action coming your way; Army and Evil Dead fans are in for a bit of a treat.
Chromanoids (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Taking a page from the old Missile Command arcade game is Chromanoids, a game in which you control a stationary turret and use it to take down incoming enemy space ships. But instead of just blasting away with missiles by tapping around the screen, players have to add precision aim and fast reaction times in order to succeed. Enemy ships are all color-coded, requiring you to tap in the corresponding color on a control panel to fire missiles that match the enemies. But things get tougher as enemies start to have combined colors (red and yellow makes orange, for example) and ships that are protected by one color as armor and another as its main body. The end result is a lot of fast-moving action that’s pretty challenging and feels fresh.

Scene It? Movies 2 (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Another iteration of the movie trivia game Scene It? includes all the great features of its predecessors — challenging questions that include pictures, sound, full video clips, and more to quiz you on everything you know about popular films. But Scene It? Movies 2 deserves a nod for all the technical features it brings to bear as the latest entry in the series. This new game includes Air Play support, allowing multiple players to compete using different iDevices around a room. It also packs Game Center support that allows players to test their trivia knowledge against others all over the world, opening up Scene It? to social gaming in lots of cool, new ways.
Spider Jack (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Spider Jack isn’t far off in premise from the ever-popular Cut the Rope. Like that puzzler, this one lets players cut a spider’s silk in order to drop him on a fly trapped in a web. But instead of just doing cutting only, you can actually create ropes in Spider Jack. When your spider shoots his web at a spot that he can latch onto, he automatically starts to climb it and leaves his last web behind. So instead of just having the cutting mechanic, you also get vertical motion and swinging under your control in Spider Jack, creating some tough and innovative puzzles that are still easy to pick up and figure out.
Archetype Cadet (iPhone, iPad) Free
Archetype is one of the highest-quality games in the App Store. The multiplayer-only first-person shooter has a big community of players and features lots of maps, customization options, and high-speed, intense gameplay. But you don’t necessarily have to pay the cost of admission to get an idea of what Archetype is all about, thanks to the newly released Archetype Cadet, a free version of the shooter. Cadet packs just two maps, but it supports Archetype’s full five-on-five multiplayer deathmatches. So for free, you can play a full-powered first-person shooter on your iOS device, with four of your friends. That makes this one definitely worth a download.
