As we near football season, Yahoo! looks to increase its Android presence with an upcoming Fantasy Football app. Just weeks after releasing Android apps for Mail and Messenger, Yahoo’s finally bulking up its Android offerings.
Geico is also planning to launch an Android app, having already launched on the iPhone.
While we wait for those titles to kick off on the Android, check out these great new releases available right now.
Media and entertainment
Moving out of beta is Opera Mini, the popular browser for Android. Access bookmarks, manage passwords and take advantage of tabbed browsing on your mobile phone. There are speed dial options, creating actions around various mobile-browsing tasks, all for free.
Another subscription music service has landed in the Android Market. MOG, launching an Android and iPhone app this week, gives you on-demand music for $9.99 per month. Download songs to your phone for offline enjoyment, or stream artist-specific stations. You can search, view recommendations and artist info — all of which is nicely laid out.
MeCanto is another music service, syncing and storing music to your phone. The free app makes your music mobile, giving you something of an iTunes-like catalog and music player on your Android device. Filter by song, artist or album, create playlists and organize with folders. For syncing, MeCanto currently supports PCs only.
User-friendly
LauncherPro released an update for its Android app, with custom configurations for contacts directly from your home screen, and a “friends” widget displaying Twitter and Facebook status updates (you can update from here as well). The free app gives you seven home screen profiles, with new bulk management tools for text messages.
Combining the functions of a remote and a few magic spells, LogMeIn lets you access your desktop from your phone. Open your starter menu, open apps and operate your computer from across the room or the state. It will cost you nearly $30, but the app demonstrates the fluidity expected of smartphones and desktops.
Making your phone content locally aware, the Lokast app has made its way to Android. Free, the Lokast app pulls up shared media based on your location, giving you a discovery tool for learning about your immediate environment. From Facebook photos to nearby friends, Lokast is constantly orienting you in time and space.
T-Pain may have autotunes on the iPhone covered, but Android users can finally get in on the fun with MicDroid. Sing a tune into your phone and the free app will correct your pitch. There’s no saving or sharing options, and MicDroid isn’t nearly as seamless as T-Pain’s autotunes app for the iPhone, but MicDroid is off to a good start.
Upcoming
Yahoo! just launched a series of Android apps for accessing Mail and Messenger. Next up is Fantasy Football, with an upcoming app for Android. Yahoo’s Fantasy Football app will let you set your roster, get real-time scores and manage your players. Hopefully it will be here in time for the the start of the season.
Already on the iPhone, the Geico Glovebox app helps you file claims and access your insurance account information. Free, the upcoming Android app will also be a mobile tool for paying bills, calling for roadside assistance or a taxi, viewing tutorials and getting a quote.
