I have to admit that I was skeptical when I first tried Bump. But the free and much-hyped iPhone application succeeds in being both practical and cool.
The function of Bump, which was the one-billionth application downloaded from the iTunes app store, is to transfer data from one iPhone to another by simply bumping hands with another user. Whether you want to transfer a phone number or a picture, all you have to do is bump hands for your data to be synced.
I can’t count how many times I have entered new contact info incorrectly the first time around. But the Bump takes those inaccuracies out of the equation by saving the contact info directly into your address book.
Although this might not be a problem for most people, the cool factor of the Bump as both a functional application and a conversation piece is evident.
The process of exchanging contact information was is extremely quick. It took six or seven seconds to exchange info with one of my friends. It took about the same amount of time to exchange a recently taken picture, which could be the most useful part of the Bump app.The exchange was seamless, even though both parties have to confirm the swap before the information is exchanged.
Each iPhone also has to be equipped with the app to work, which could be a hurdle for some exchanges.
The app may never live up to the hype surrounding it, but the fact that it’s free makes it worthwhile to at least give it a try.
