High-end gaming on Android phones has been largely held back not by the operating system, but by hardware. However, now that Android is more popular than ever, we are seeing an increase in high-spec phones, like Google’s Nexus One and the Sprint EVO. With more processing power, better battery life and higher frame rates, game developers are porting and creating beautiful 3D games to the platform. Here are some new and upcoming Android releases that channel of all the power provided by the new hardware, and focus it into an awesome 3D mobile gaming experience.
Welcome to Hell ($3.99) — This is a first person shooter in the horror/survival genre. Game play is much like the Nazi Zombie mini-game in Call of Duty: World at War. Each level consists of a number of zombies attacking in different waves, which must be defeated in order to reach the next level. As the levels progress, more and more enemies attack in faster intervals. This game is supported by all phones running Android 2.1 and higher.
Raging Thunder 2 ($4.99)- Buckle up and take advantage of your phone’s built in accelerometer and steer your car to the finish line using the phone itself. The sequel to the very popular racing game Raging Thunder offers better control responses, more levels, six different player modes, and online multi-player support; not to mention, the graphics are stunning. The developers, Polarbit, released the Android version simultaneously with the iPhone version, showing just how seriously top notch developers are taking the Android platform.
Crusade of Destiny ($5.99) – RPG lovers, get ready for a full-fledged, free-roaming RPG recently ported from the iPhone to the Android. As with most RPG’s, your character has access to swords, bows and spells. As you move through the world, you can defeat enemies to level up, gain skill points and earn money to buy armor, weapons, potions and other items. The world is very expansive and there are a lot of villages and dungeons to explore. This is not a short game, so if you’re the kind who likes to put multiple hours into a game exploring worlds, casting magic and slaying bad guys, this is the game for you.
Homerun Battle 3D ($4.99) – Have a home run derby right on your phone. As with most competitions, this game is better with multiple players. The coolest feature about this game is the ability to link up and play against any of your friends, regardless of what device they have. I can link up with my friends who have an iPhone for a quick game with no problem. Although the game is pretty simple, the idea of cross-platform multi-player gaming is an idea that could change mobile gaming if more developers embrace it.
